scenic countryside
Ben Logan once said in The Land Remembers: “Once you have lived on this land, been partner with its moods, secrets and seasons, you cannot leave.” Certainly, this land does cast its spell on visitor and longtime resident alike.
Called “The Driftless Area” by many, what you see here, and nowhere else in the Upper Midwest, is an ancient landscape given its shape far, far earlier than anything else around it: The unglaciated rolling hills, sweeps of oak savannah and prairie, and bluffs looking over the Wisconsin River Valley are timeless and alive.
abundantly artistic
The area has nurtured a dynamic and welcoming artistic community of which Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin and American Players Theater are but two examples. For extensive information on attractions, artists and performing arts in the area, visit www.springreen.com
Here, too, for more than a quarter-century, the Rural Musicians Forum has connected music, musicians and the community in shared a shared experience of musical artistry, inspiration and education.
inspiring settings for music
Rural Musicians Forum sponsors summer events in three uniquely inviting locations, each of which adds a distinctive artistic and historic perspective to its varied concerts and performances, as well as traditional midwestern hymn-sings.
Taliesin – Hillside School
2011 marked the 100th Anniversary of Frank Lloyd Wright’s treasured Taliesin home. Wright lived at Taliesin for over 50 years and a many of his world-famous commissions were created there. It has been referred to as his “autobiography in wood and stone’ because of the role the location played in his life.
It was at Hillside, which Wright built for his aunts in 1902 as a boarding school, that he first was seen to challenge the assumptions of conventional architectural design. Beginning in 1930, he created his own school there, a community of architects and designers, known as the Taliesin Fellowship.
Taliesin welcomes the Rural Musicians Forum for occasional concerts each summer. Its jewel-like theater provides a dramatic, intimate setting for performances that embrace musical traditions of global significance, drawing upon the rich resources of Taliesin students, faculty and friends, as well as local and professional artists.
